Nathalie Wergles
She has a degree in Landscape Architecture and Landscape Ecology from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna (Austria). She also has a degree in Environmental Technology and International Relations from the Vienna University of Technology in conjunction with the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna (Austria).
Over the past eight years she has worked in the field of regional development and territorial cooperation, thereby contributing to a Europe in which borders are becoming less and less relevant. The range of her projects includes studies in the field of management of the European Union’s Structural and Investment Funds as well as impact assessments of the Interreg Programme. She has also worked as an advisor to Interreg programmes for the creation of intervention logics, as well as for the definition of relevant indicators for the assessment of these programmes. Her advisory work has also extended to other areas, such as the Parliament of Castilla y León (Spain) on issues of rural depopulation and ageing. Currently, she is the project manager for the Horizon 2020 project “LOCOMOTION”.
Nathalie also works as a freelancer specialising in interdisciplinary research as well as design, evaluation and programme consultancy. In this role, she frequently collaborates with various European organisations on projects commissioned and funded by EU programmes, European or regional institutions, as well as on research projects funded by EU research programmes.

Fields of Research
- Regional development and planning on issues relating to the regional policy of the European Union and the management of its European Structural and Investment Funds, as well as regional development in national contexts, such as depopulation and ageing in rural Spain.
- New forms of territorial governance such as so-called soft territorial cooperation or integrated territorial strategies.
- Evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of European regional development and territorial cooperation programmes. The aim is to create more meaningful evaluations for the development and implementation of innovative approaches such as territorial impact mapping, participatory action research, longitudinal studies, etc.
- Energy and sustainable development, especially in the area of energy and environmental policy scenarios.
